MESS
ROOM
The
"Mess Room" is the place where meals and refreshments are taken. It
is the same as the room found on a naval ship. Historically the Fire Service
has many such links with the Royal Navy. It is also here that the great British
tradition of tea drinking is maintained daily.
THE 'MESS'
The mess is run by the mess manager and funded by firefighters. The cook
provides meals but sometimes there is 'self-catering'. This is the focal room
as regards 'banter' and putting the world to rights etc. Such deep deliberations
are held in high
regard and will often be noted in a large Red Book just incase
they are forgotten by those who uttered them. Eg. "So what
rank is the Chief?" (MWcirca '95) (see
ranks in the KITROOM)
READING
ROOM / NOTICEBOARD
It is also in this room where people can often be found studying
the latest editions. From the 'Echo (Sunderland Newspaper) to the 'Brigade Gazette'
and everything in between. This is also the place where notices of forthcomming
events will be posted as well as 'wants and for sales'.
WALLS
OF FAME
On the walls around the room can be found various pictures and certificates
relating to the station's history and events. Children from the Chernobyl area
visited in the past and are due to return this summer.
